Six Sunday--Lost in New Falls

Six Sentence Sunday time again, and we're still in New Falls with screenwriter, Sara Delaney, and small-town sheriff, Quentin Taylor. Sara's laptop is still missing along with her ready-to-send screenplay-of-her-heart, and this week we finally get a glimpse inside Quentin's head. He's thinking back to when Sara, her brother Reese, and he were younger and how things changed as they all matured, especially Sara.

Then she’d developed, and hell, despite himself, he’d noticed, and so had every other teenage male in their circle, but Reese made it clear she was off limits. No one was to look at her, matter alone touch her. Like a tempting test of his loyalty, she’d come to him, and he’d never wanted anything more in his life then or since, but Reese had been his friend when everyone else had shunned him on account of the scandal surrounding his parents. He knew what he had to do. He’d resisted, and that’d been the last he’d seen her.

Now she was back in New Falls, and although he’d been attracted to her before, now she was damn near irresistible.

Six Sunday--Lost in New Falls

HAPPY SUPERBOWL! Break out the chips and dip and fire up the commercials because it's Superbowl Sunday. It's also, Six Sentence Sunday, and we're still in New Falls with screenwriter, Sara Delaney, and small-town sheriff, Quentin Taylor. Sara's laptop is still missing along with her ready-to-send screenplay-of-her-heart, and this week she says goodbye to the good sheriff to take a call from her agent. Some mixed emotions surface.

“I have to take this.”

“Of course. If you need anything, here’s my number.” He left a card on her countertop and moved toward the door with a grace that belied his muscular frame. She didn’t stop him, knew she wouldn't use his number, and felt confident it would be the last time she encountered him while here in New Falls. Yet, rather than the relief she expected, a weird sense of loss hit her instead.

Please welcome Rachel Brimble to the blog today. It's always a great day around here when we have a visitor. It certainly brightens up the place.

Rachel was generous enough to answer a few questions for me. So, let's get to know her a little better.

Do you have a usual writing routine?

I am lucky enough to be a stay at home mom and now my kids are older (12 & 10), I have most of the day to myself through the week. I am at my laptop at 9am and work through to 2.30 pm (with a dog walk in between!), five days a week. Once the kids are home I am out and about most of the time before dinner, but still sneak back and forth to the laptop until around 7pm.

Then it’s family time which often involves slumping in front of the TV, lol!

What aspect of writing comes easy to you? What is difficult?

I find dialogue and characterization the easiest – very early on in a draft I will hear the hero and heroine’s voice in my head. Once I know who they are, it’s like I am taking dictation when they are speaking.

The difficult aspect for me is the plotting – keeping the characters apart through their internal motivations, that’s the hardest. Too often my characters just want to be together and will fight for their relationship far too soon!

What does it take to be a successful author in today’s publishing world?

Tenacity! Anyone can succeed at anything. The trick is whether or not you are prepared to take the rejection, brush yourself off and try again. Writing is a craft, it can be learned BUT you have to be open to constructive criticism, accept that your first attempt isn’t going to be on the NY Bestseller list and that some readers/reviewers are going to hate what you get published.

This is a business.

Who has helped you along the way?

SO many people I don’t know where to start! My husband is my biggest support and believer, he’s always said I will make it and often makes a point of telling me I am his retirement fund ;)

Professionally, every editor I have had (5 for 6 different books) has taught me a new aspect to the craft which has helped me improve. I am also a member of Romance Writers of America and the Romantic Novelists Association (UK equivalent). The tips and skills I have picked up through meetings and conferences have also been invaluable.

Most of all, I have learnt more than I ever thought from my agent and we have only been working together ten months. I am excited about the future!

Dog, cat, or neither? Dog – my black Labrador is my third child and my shadow J

Favorite movie and why?

When A Man Loves A Woman – it has everything. Tears, laughter, personal growth and sacrifice. I wish I’d written it!

Favorite television shows?

Even though I am a Brit and lived in the UK all my life, my favorite shows are all US dramas – I love Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives and Big Love. On the crime side, I love Rizzoli & Isles – such great characters and chemistry.

Salty, sweet, or both? Hmm…bit of both I think. Depends on the mood ;)

One side of his mouth lifted slightly, causing a flutter to sway deep in her belly. “Do you think we’ll have time to catch up before you go?”

She didn’t know whether to laugh or freakin’ flip him off. Really? Did he really believe she wanted to catch up with the man she’d thrown herself at only to be completely rejected? She had no intention of catching up with Quentin Taylor, now or ever.

They walked through the five rooms of the cabin until she didn’t notice anything else missing, and they had a tally of everything in her refrigerator, medicine cabinet, and closet. Quentin sent the deputies out and pulled her into the kitchen. His familiar spicy scent tickled her nose, and feelings she’d thought she’d suppressed years ago surfaced.

Arms crossed, backside leaning against the tiled countertop, he stared at her intensely, and she felt like a slice of decadent chocolate cake. Maybe that was just her former food-addiction speaking.

EXCITING!! We have a guest. Our first in a while, but it certainly won't be our last.

So, I've cleaned up a little and pulled out the GOOD china for a very special visit with Susan Macatee. She agreed to answer a few questions for my readers, and the answers are in and ready to share with you, so here we go:

Whatis your writing routine?

My routine has varied overthe years, but I find I can concentrate best in the afternoon, after my morningworkout, the dog outings, errands, laundry and household cleaning are complete.Having all that out of the way clears my head for working on my primaryproject. That said, I used to start writing right after lunch, but now find itworks better for me if I deal with book promotion, blogging and any othernon-writing commitments I have to take care of online, then I take a shortmid-afternoon break and get to whichever project I’m working on for that day. Iwork until it’s time to start dinner.

Whichcomes first for you—plot or characters?

The characters always comefirst. I envision my hero and heroine, create personality sheets for each one,as well as descriptions, then work on the main supporting characters. AlthoughI have a general idea of the plot, I have to know my characters before I workthe detailed plot out.

Whatdid you enjoy most about writing your latest work?

For Cassidy’s War, I usedcharacters from a previously published Civil War novel, now out of print, andcreated a brand new story for them occurring five years after the original bookended. I really loved these characters and it was great to revisit them. Alsotheir background was already worked out in the first book, making it that mucheasier to establish motivation. Although I’m sure readers who read the firstbook will enjoy seeing those characters again, the story is self-contained, soyou don’t have to read the first book.

Canyou talk about what you are working on now?

I’m working on a novellabased on my published Civil War time travel romance, Erin’sRebel. The heroine was a small child in that book and is now a grown woman workingas a reporter for a small town newspaper. The hero is a modern day contractorwho falls in love with an old house and the tintype of a young woman hanging onthe wall. While surveying one of the rooms in the house, he gets conked on thehead by a loose beam and wakes in the past, in the arms of the heroine.

I also have a Civil Warnovella coming out this April. Cole’s Promise is part of the new ‘Love Letters’series at The Wild Rose Press. The story is based on a letter that changes oneof the main character’s lives.

Dog,cat, or neither?

I’d have to say I’mdefinitely a dog person. Never thought I would be because my mom wouldn’t letus have a dog when I was growing up. But I fell in love with our first dog, afemale boxer named Kelly. She left us a few years back after nine short years.But we now have a male boxer-mix named Chase. He’s not quite two years old andis still full of puppy energy.

Favoritetelevision shows?

My favorites right now are‘The Walking Dead’ (just something about those zombies, lol), but I’ve really gotten into the characterstoo; just started watching ‘Hell OnWheels’ mainly because it’s set in the time period I write. I love American sethistoricals. And my absolute favorite show is ‘House.’

Have to say both. Chocolatecovered pretzels, anyone?

The Author

Susan Macatee sets her stories of romance during and just after the American Civil War. Her passion for this period in American history also extends to the paranormal. You’ll find time travelers, ghosts, and vampires in the mix.

Her interest in the period stems from her years spent as a civilian Civil War reenactor, alongside her husband, who did the military side, with the 28th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment for about ten years.

She lives with her husband and sons, and the family dog, a boxer-mix named Chase. She spends her free time cheering on her local baseball team, the Philadelphia Phillies, spending time with Chase and her husband, watching favorite old movies, and inhaling books.

She narrowed her gaze. "It's hard to think kindly on someone who leaves you, no matter what the reason. I know you were hurting, but we could have made a life together. Healed each other."

He shook his head. "I would've held you back."

"From what?"

"Well...you're a doctor. That was your dream when I returned from prison camp."

"And look what a fine mess I've made of that." She bowed her head, studying his hand wrapped around hers. His warm touch sent tingles straight to her core. But what was he doing here? Did he really come back for her, or had something or someone else drawn him to Burkeville?

"George, what's the real reason you're here?" She held her breath, hoping for the answer she wanted to hear.

He withdrew his hand from hers, taking his warmth with it. "I thought I should come back and check on Pa." His dark gaze settled on her. "I didn't reckon you'd ever want to see me again, especially after the disaster I made of my life—and yours."

She leaned back. "George, you’re wearing fine clothing, telling us about your adventures in New York and California." She shook her head. "Doesn't sound to me like your life's a mess."

He chewed his lower lip. "I haven't told you all of it. After I left you, I wandered for a long time. I’m not really clear on all of it, because half the time I was so drunk I didn't know who or where I was."

Cassidy stood. "Well, I have to say, you look none the worse for wear after all you've been through."

"Cassie, I..." George grinned, lifting his thumbs to the lapels of his coat. "I always had a knack for poker. Cleaned out many fellow soldiers during the war."

"Are you telling me you're a professional gambler?"

He grimaced, dropping his gaze. "I'm not the type of man a physician should associate with. To tell the truth, I figured you'd already forgotten me. I expected to find you with a husband and children by now."

"There's no one else, George, if that's what you're getting at. Since you left, I haven't exactly had a slew of suitors at my door." She eyed him, not sure why she'd told him.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Now that I got that out, thanks to all who made 2011 a fantastic year for me by stopping by and commenting here and sharing such incredible talent week after week. Hope 2012 blesses you all!

We're still in New Falls, Tennessee with Sara Delaney and Sheriff Quentin Taylor. Sara has just reported a burglary during which her laptop was stolen (EEK!). She's just finished explaining she's also missing her underwear and has her fingers crossed that the good sheriff won't recognize her. But that's not how conflict works. Six Sunday--Lost in New Falls

A little late seems to be my theme. In this week's snippet, we pick up with the sheriff's and his deputy's reaction to hearing what exactly had been stolen from Sara Delaney (besides her laptop--eek!):

            “You mean they took your underwear?”
            She sighed and rolled her eyes. “Do I have to spell it out for you? Panties, bras, and other lingerie, all gone.”
            Their looks were laughable, but she just wasn’t in the mood to yuk it up when someone out there had her life’s work in his or her grubby hands, and she was just desperate enough to want it back she was willing to work with Quentin. Once they closed their mouths, both suddenly became very interested in the report in the deputy’s hands.

Six Sentence Sunday--Lost in New Falls

We're back in New Falls this week. This story was the 1st place winner in The Beacon Unpublished contest for category romance. I was ecstatic to say the least. The first two installments have introduced Sara Delaney, a writer living the nightmare of having her laptop stolen along with various other items--like her underwear--and now she has to tell her long-time crush exactly what she's missing. Without further ado, here are six more lines from Lost in New Falls:

            “Well, Sheriff, someone waited until Ms. Delaney exited the premises and broke inside, taking various items that she’s currently listing for me. She was just going over the bedroom items. You were saying about your underwear drawer?”

             She could feel her cheeks heat, and she had a sudden nervous urge to reach for something unhealthy but oh-so-tasty. She’d left emotional eating behind long ago though, so instead, she inhaled deeply and answered, “No valuables missing from the drawer, just the,” she cleared her throat again, “contents.”

             Both men went still, their faces frozen, mouths open and for the briefest of moments, Quentin’s gaze roamed down her body and back up, lingering in a couple places.

Sorry about the lateness of this post, but I received some awesome news about this piece yesterday, and lost my mind for a little while. More on that later. For now, here are six more lines from Lost in New Falls:

She took a deep breath, but the breath caught in her throat at the sight of the hulking man who stepped through her door, one shoulder at a time. Anybody but him. Her heart began to pound. Quentin Taylor’s badge glinted on his shirt as he nodded to a few men in her kitchen, then he sauntered over to her and the young deputy standing beside her. He was the sheriff, his looks had grown more devastating over the past ten years, and she was going to have to tell him exactly what the thief had taken out of her underwear drawer. Whoever it was ran away with all her silky lingerie, leaving her with only the bra and panties she currently wore.

Top Ten Best Things About Being a Writer

Gravity has ceased working around here because I am walking on air.

Into the Fire got a fantastic 4 1/2 star review at Night Owl Reviews.

The reviewer said, "there are a few tantalizing scenes that are as steamy as the food cooking in the kitchen. A quick easy read, but beware of feeling hungry afterwords!"

She unfolded her hands from her mouth and nodded. She cleared her throat and bit her lip. It was a little embarrassing. “An alarm clock, a pillow, and…uh, well, whoever it was, cleared out my underwear drawer.”

"You had valuables hidden there?”

Oh yes, it's that time of year again. First, Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Hope your holiday is oh, so delicious. Second, my top ten list is timely. If you've never experienced a Friday with the shopping masses, you don't know what you're missing. There are deals to be found, right? Well, I've only ever been once, but I can assure you that these are ten things you'll never hear while shopping on Black Friday. Hope you enjoy!

10. No, go ahead of me in line. I don't mind.
9.    We're only going to two stores--three tops.
8.    I'm confused. It's midnight...are we shopping late or early?
7.    I sure hope I spend enough money to recover the economy.

Six Sentence Sunday--Lost in New Falls

Thank you so much to all the sixers who continue to pop in, read, and comment each week. It is a great way to go into Monday. Here are six from my current wip--Lost in New Falls. It's un-edited for the most part, but the opening is a nightmare for any writer and especially for Sara Delaney, the heroine of this story:

Over…so over. Her life was over. Her career wasover. As the sheriff’s deputies trompedaround the little cabin her grandfather left her several years ago, theycatalogued her missing items, but all Sara Delaney could focus on was the onemajor electronic that was everything to her—her laptop. She wasn’t sure how she’d managed to swallowa barbell, but it felt like one was lodged in her chest. Her laptop was gone, along with her all she’dwritten over the years.

Six Sunday--Into the Fire

I've been away for a couple weeks, but I'm back to share six sentences from Into the Fire, my short story with The Wild Rose Press. Here is a romantic moment after the reality show competition has wrapped. Hope you enjoy.

Her gaze hit his, and the pit of his stomach twisted as the heat melted him like butter on a hot roll.

"I can’t promise anything, Luke. You’ve given me every reason not to trust you, but after what you made me feel in the pantry, I know I want at least one more night with you.”

“I’ll take that.” He leaned forward and reached a hand under her ponytail to cup the back of her neck and pull her toward him as he lowered his lips to meet hers. The minute their mouths touched, he was in heaven.

Please Welcome Elke Feuer

I'm so excited to welcome fellow Angel Elke Feuer to the blog today. One of the original Angels who met at RWA10, she is often the first one to congratulate or promote, and I, for one, couldn't appreciate knowing her more.

She agreed to answer a few questions and let us know about her current project.

Tell us a little about your writing routine...

I write at least two hours every dayduring the week and two-four hours on the weekends. I get to work early in themorning, so I write in the evening after my son goes to bed. On the weekendsit’s at my favorite coffee shop.

Mmmm...coffee. Add a little chocolate, and you got a perfect writing environment. Whatinspires you?

I’d have tosay fellow writers. Their enthusiasm, support and encouragement of each otherand of course their success. They’re real people and if they can have successthen maybe I can too.

With a story like your current project, there's no doubt you can have success. Let's take a look at the blurb...

For the Love of Jazz

To launch her restoration architecture company, Josie Fagan must convince Patrick Pullman she’s the only one who can restore his unique 1940s bungalow. She gets more than she bargains for when a condition of the contract is that she stays at the house with him, and what Patrick Pullman wants, Patrick Pullman gets…  She feels an immediate connection not only to Patrick and his house, but to the previous tenants, Patrick’s uncle and his lover, Lola, who disappeared fifty years ago. Is the attraction between Patrick and Josie real, are Lola and William still acting out their unfinished lives or is the house just haunted?

Patrick Pullman doesn’t believe in ghosts or that his house is haunted, but when he starts having visions of Lola; maybe Josie isn’t crazy after all. Will they find out the truth before she disappears too?

Oooh, this sounds like such a great story, but I digress.

Where in theworld would you want to visit (all in the name of research, of course) and why?

At the top ofmy list is Chicago where my current story is based. But I’d love to visitPetra, Florence, Peru and China. You can’t help but think stories are therewaiting to be discovered and told.

Do yourcharacters reveal themselves before or during your draft and how?

Sometimesthey reveal themselves before the story starts through a dream or a glimpse ofsomeone in the store or coffee shop. Other times they don’t reveal themselvesuntil the story begins to unfold and at that point I have to interrogate them. J

Isn't that the truth? What works one time, doesn't always work the next.

What wasyour first writing piece and where is it now?

It was thestory of a woman whose ship is captured by a Pirate and they fall in lovedespite their differences in background. I was twelve at the time and wrote iton the typewriter my parents gave me for my birthday. Unfortunately itdisappeared when I was editing it at school.

Can you share an excerpt from your current work?

Excerpt

“I want you stay at the house during therenovations and not take on any other jobs until mine is done.”

“What?” He couldn’t be serious. She searched hisface. He was. “Why do I need to stay at the house?”

“I need this project finished in ten months andthat will mean having you close to discuss design and restoration changes.Living at the house is the best option and also eliminates the risk of theft.”He leaned back in his chair. “Room and board is free. You don’t want to wastemoney your business needs, do you?”

Damn, he knew about her finances and was going toplay hard ball. She had no intention of letting him use it against her orbacking down. She was the best candidate and they both knew it. If she wasn’the would have hired another company. “I want a flattering personal reference,”she countered.

A cocky grin curved his lips. “Then Iwant guarantees.”

She held his gaze.

“You’ll get your reference if you meetmy ten month deadline, if I’m satisfied with the quality of the work, and ifthe job comes within budget.” He moved his chair back into the uprightposition.

“That will not include changes you maketo my original estimate or if you select inferior products,” she addedquickly.

His smile broadened and his boyishdimple winked at her.

Was he enjoying this?

Damn him, he was!

She didn’t like it one bit. He was taking awaythe control she wanted, needed to have. The excitement she felt when he agreedto hire her vanished. The masculine atmosphere that had floated in the air likecheap cologne when she arrived squeezed around her to uncomfortable.

“Do we have a deal?” His confident tone impliedhe knew the answer.

Weekend Dirty Dozen for Into the Fire

Shyann and Luke are two professional chefs going head-to-head on a televised cooking competition. This kitchen is too hot for TV. We pick up where we left off last week. (See last week's dirty dozen here)

And though they say revenge is best served cold, their relationshiphadn’t been on ice long enough to chill her anger yet.

She’dmanaged to avoid him most of the evening as she went through hair and makeup,but the earlier rehearsal was another story. It had been pure torture, beingforced to endure his presence, walking through the opening face-off, andprepping their cooking stations within inches of each other. It was bad enoughthat he looked better than she trying to dismiss him from her thoughts, she reached for her chef’sjacket and began to wrap herself in her white cotton armor for the upcomingbattle. She needed to win today, hands down. When she’d quit her job at therestaurant, thanks to Luke, she’d begun working on something she’d neverimagined. A win on this show would launch her tiny event planning company intoan actual business, and she liked the idea of being an independent businessowner, never having to rely on the chefs above her to make or break her career.Never having someone you trust break your heart.

“What has you so distracted, darling?”

She startled and cursed herself for reacting to his deep timbre. Chillsran down her spine at the thought of him at her back. Steeling her body, sheturned to face him and sucked in a breath at the sight of his gorgeous face upclose, with its perfect angles and wake-and-run stubble.

Top Five Misconceptions About Romance Writers

If you're interested, come visit me at A. J. Nuest's Tattered Pages blog today. I'm discussing that dreaded manuscript-under-the-bed. Then come back and take a look at some common misconceptions about romance writers.

I write romance, and I mostly share this information with other romance writers or readers. Occasionally though, I tell someone who is not necessarily familiar with the genre, and their misconceptions are laughable. You'll notice there are only five items on the list this time. This is because I had to have some space to clear up the misconceptions. So, here are the top five misconceptions about romance writers. I might have exaggerated...just...a...smidge ;-)

5. Misconception--The ideas for stories come from our little, secret perversions.

     Reality--My perversions are BIG and out there, baby! (Okay, I've been married to the same man for fifteen years, and he's still my best friend and fave person to be with, so no hidden perversions here).

4. Misconception--All romance writers are un-happy, love-starved housewives who need an outlet for all their pent-up frustration before they explode.

     Reality--I have a Master's Degree and a professional day job. See previous item concerning my level of happiness and frustration concerning my love life.

3. Misconception--All romance books are full of heaving bosoms, throbbing loins, and wistful sighs.

     Reality--As a genre, romance has come a long way. There are many types of romance for all kinds of readers. From chick lit to urban fantasy to romantic suspense to Inspirational, the choices are endless, and the heroines are multifaceted. Gone are the simpering damsels in distress. Now, she'd be more likely to kick his throbbing loins just for looking at her heaving bosoms until he was wistfully sighing for his crushed boys below, if you know what I mean.

2. Misconception--Romance stories are the easiest genre to write, and anyone can write one.

     Reality--Pull all your fingernails and toenails out with a pair of pliers, pluck each of your hairs out one at a time with a pair of tweezers, and pull your bottom lip over your head until you can taste the back of your neck(I stole and modified that last one from Bill Cosby), then you'll know the pain and frustration a romance writer encounters trying to write a publishable story that appeals to a wide audience of readers and might make a little money.

1. Misconception--Romance writers sit around in feather boas, pink fuzzy slippers, and eat bon-bons all day.

     Reality--Okay, this one is soooo true (or at least I wish it were).

I'm Elsewhere

CRAZY!! That's where I'm going today. Turns out I signed up for Weekend Dirty Dozen, b-u-t I realized I wouldn't be able to participate because of all the guesting I'm doing this weekend, so I e-mailed to tell the admin to remove me for this weekend. Eeeennnhhh (buzzer sound). Just got an e-mail back that says my first one didn't go through. So, here it is--a rushed dirty dozen from Into the Fire. These are the first twelve lines of this short story from The Wild Rose Press. The buy links are at the bottom of this post, if you are interested.

Heat-ray vision would be so perfect right about now. Shyann Devere crossed her arms and glared.

The man sitting five feet to the right of her, legs sprawled, Sudoku puzzle book in hand, looked like
he didn’t have a care in the world. She imagined hot beams burning from her eyes, searing him to
cinders. But barring any sudden toxic waste incidents or radioactive insect encounters, she’d just
have to be satisfied with her disappointingly unsuper-powered, but über-angry gaze. There was one
dilemma, though. She had no intention of actually looking directly at him, but an out-of-the-corner eye stare didn’t have quite the burn-him-to-ash punch she was going for. And what was worse, he didn’t even seem to know she was in the room.

The last time Shyann had seen Luke Tracy, it’d been raining, he’d been naked, juggling his clothes,

and she’d been pushing him out her door for what she’d hoped was the last time. She’d spent the last
month and a half in California wine country, researching an article and creatively avoiding him.
Now, they were competitors on a nationally aired television cooking show. Vengeance was hers with a win.

Top Ten Reasons Vampires Will Never Die

I write contemporary, but it is scaring season, so today's Top Ten is all about vampires.  And, though book industry people say the market is saturated, there will always be romance books with vampires and here's why. Hope you enjoy.

10.  Turns out, a diet of blood results in less tummy upset (any vamps fart in the books you've read?).

Six Sunday--Who's the Cake Boss

Into the Fire is out there, and I didn't participate in Six Sentence Sunday last week because I was hosting an awesome angel and author, Kellie Kamryn, but I couldn't wait to get back to it. This week, I thought I'd post an excerpt from a different MS. Another look at what happens behind the scenes on a reality show with my current WIP, Who's the Cake Boss.

Freaked-out of his mind was not afeeling he felt—ever. He’d parachutedout of planes, base-jumped from cliff-sides, swum with sharks in openwater. You name it, he’d done it. But the feisty female rolling fondant andmixing all sorts of sweet concoctions at the station next to him scared himlike nothing else. She was mystery andperfection rolled into one, and though at one time she thought he could do nowrong, now nothing was further from the truth. His one time apprentice had improved her skills over the last year, but itwas obvious she’d just as soon toast his lower marshmallows than talk to himnow.

Consideringthey were stuck together in a traveling kitchen trailer that made the familycamper look like a mansion, how they felt about each other didn’t matter though.

For my first ever guest on the blog, I'm welcoming good friend and amazing author--Kellie Kamryn. She is multi-talented and a multi-published romance writer, and I can't tell you enough how excited I am to have her here today.

So, Kellie, tell us a bit about your writing routine.

I try to write first thing in the morning when thingsare fresh. Then I’ll do promotion in the afternoon.

Aaah, to have a plan. Sounds smart. Which comes first for you--plot or characters?

First it’s an idea for a scenario, then I create thecharacters. They tell me the story while I write.

I love a chatty character. Do your characters reveal themselves before or during your draft?

I think my characters reveal a bit about themselves a little at atime.

As far as the other aspects of writing, does your editor cheer or cringe when your manuscript crosses his/her desk?

So far, I’ve had great compliments on my writingmechanics and edits haven’t been too painful. Crossing fingers it stays that way!LOL

Tell us a bit about your latest release, Going for Gold. What did you enjoy most about writing this piece?

I needed something to inspire me, something to get meback into the swing of writing. So, my friend suggested a short Christmasthemed read just to get the muse working again.

Let's give the readers a taste of what Going for Gold is about. Here's a blurb for the book:

It was an office Christmasparty filled with sexual tension. Gymnastics coach Grant Howard couldn’t keephis eyes off the newly-hired cheerleader coach. And sultry Teena Adams felt thesame way. The “rah-rah-rahs” she felt were cheers of unbridled lust. From punchand cookies to sexual escapades on a gym apparatus, you’ll never look at Christmasparties or a trampoline the same way again. It’s winner-take-all, when loversare Going for Gold.

This sounds like a hot read! After finishing Monkey's, Sex, and Other Birthday Surprises, I'm ready for another, so this is on my TBR ASAP list.

Speaking of your other work, what was your first writing piece and where is it now?

Thefirst thing I ever wrote is somewhere in a folder on my computer! I may drag itout again some day and polish it up, LOL But what I really am looking forwardto promoting are my novels – The Love and Balance series – set to come out inJanuary and February from Secret Cravings Publishing. I also have an eroticshort story, Pleasure Island, coming out in October as well with The Wild RosePress (www.wilderroses.com) that willforever be my favorite as it was the first thing I wrote after my marriageended.

Oh, I hate waiting! To soothe my impatience, can you share an excerpt from Going for the Gold?

His balls ached. Hecontemplated discreetly adjusting his junk to assuage his discomfort butdecided against it. It wouldn't help matters. At least not when the reason forit stood across the room, all sleek muscle and pleated, short skirt. She hadbeen taunting him with that cheerleader body of hers since the day she'd cometo work at the gym back in the fall.

Raucouslaughter made Grant Howard glance over just in time to see Teena Adams tip herhead back, laughing at whatever had caused the uproar. At the sight of herbeautiful profile, his cock jumped to attention. Her Christmas attire—red andgreen plaid skirt, green knee-high stockings, fire engine red heels, and whitebutton-down blouse—was sexy as hell. He wouldn’t be able to endure this torturemuch longer.

It’s notlike he didn’t get any on a regular basis. His reputation circulating as a“ladies man” with his female co-workers hadn’t escaped his attention. Heneither perpetuated the myth nor did anything to dispel it. He got his fairshare of pussy, but not from any of the women he coached with. Not that theyweren’t hot—most gymnasts had a body a man would kill to get his hands on. Butit was only common sense that if you wanted a good gym atmosphere, you didn’tfuck around with the girls on staff.

Only one hour in. He hadn’t been at the party long enough to call it anight and head to the bar to find some real action.

Teenacaught his eye from across the room. He held her gaze, barely able to breathe.Electricity crackled between them. One corner of her mouth quirked upward in ahalf smile, and she threw him a surreptitious wink. A friend nudged her arm,and he swore she grudgingly allowed herself to be pulled back into theconversation.

His heartthudded in his chest. Is she flirting with me? Was she interested in him too? She hadn’t given himany indication before tonight, and she couldn’t be drunk. Due to some of theunderage coaches in attendance, the party was dry.

Grantthrew back the rest of his punch, wondering if he should just go for it. Thenone way or another, he could get over the affect she had on him. One waywould be to sink my cock into her— He cut that train of thought off at the pass. Bad idea, man.If things didn’t go well, work would be hell.

You write in the male POV so well! I can't wait to get my hands on this one!

Other than impatience for the next read, is there any particular emotional reaction you're trying to evoke with your writing?

I want them to laugh, cry, get aroused, or feel whatever the characters are feeling in a given moment.

Boxer briefs – they are totally sexy.Although, commando is great too.

3. Favorite movie and why? The Saint – Val Kilmer,need I say more?

Six Sentence Sunday--Into the Fire

It's time again to have a little six sentence fun. Into the Fire releases October 5, 2011, and my excitement (and anxiety) is building. Until then, I hope to tempt readers with excerpts from this story about what happens when two chefs with a romantic past go head to head on a reality show. In this scene, Luke serves his meal to the judges, and the dishes are familiar to Shyann.

With the exception of the harissa, he had recreated the meal he’d made for her on their fourth date. It was melt-in-her-mouth delicious, and one of the reasons she’d begun to fall for him. Rarely was she impressed by other chef’s abilities, but he certainly had found a way with that meal. And with a rush of arousal, she recalled how the evening ended as well. The dessert had been unforgettable as he hand-fed the Bosc pear in a rose wine and persimmon sauce to her, then took the extra sauce and her to the bedroom. She was heating up just thinking about it.

Top Ten Reasons Man Candy is an Essential Nutrient

Many blogs, including this one (Friday Night, Ladies’ Night), offer a little gorgeous inspiration daily, once a week, or at least once in a while. Now, honestly, I’ve been known to sneak a glance or two at some fantastic offerings (Man Candy Monday, Thrusty Thursday, Tempting Tuesday, etc.), and this week’s Top Ten is why man candy is a necessary nutrient for the romantic mind. So, without further ado, here we go:

10.         Because in real life, a man that good looking would probably be high maintenance.
9.            No cheesy lines come from those beautiful lips.
8.            No matter how much we talk about...anything, he can’t get enough.
7.            Our intentions are charitable. We’re searching high and low for the shirts and buttons these poor men have misplaced.
6.            It’s a learning experience: How many abs make a six-pack (oops, I gave it away).
5.            A woman can’t live on chocolate alone (you may beg to differ).
4.            Nothing gets lost in translation. He knows exactly what we need.
3.            Research! Research! Research!
2.            We can meet him in robe and slippers, no make-up, hair a mess, and he never complains.
1.            How else am I supposed to get Gerard Butler in my house without federal prosecution?

Until then, I hope to tempt readers with excerpts from this story about what happens when two chefs with a romantic past go head to head on a reality show. In this scene, Shyann gets an opportunity to confront Luke, but his reaction isn't what she expects.

"It’s like you disappeared.”

His lowered lids widened, and the surprise on his face threw her for a moment. But it was quickly replaced with a fierce anger as he focused on someone or something behind her. “I did come for you, Shyann. I’ll always come for you.”

When his gaze lit on her again, his eyes softened, and he relaxed his arms, brushing a knuckle over one of her cheeks.

Whether New York all the way or independent through and through, we all want to make sure we’re making the best decisions for our babies (read: books), and it’s not always easy to find the right house for your work, but here are ten reasons you might consider changing publishers.

10. Your publisher is your Great-Aunt Martha who prints books in her basement.

9. A clause in your contract says you must wear MC Hammer pants to publishing functions.

8. Your publisher still uses papyrus as its publishing medium.

7. Your book cover artist’s stick figures just aren’t sexy enough.

6. To determine the publishing queue for the year, the other authors and you must battle it out in a Hunger Games-like competition.

5. Your female editor ends every conversation with, “Who’s your daddy?”

4. The publisher is willing to publish if you change the characters, the setting, the plot, oh…and the author.

I'm late! I'm late! For a very important date. Before I begin, I want to send out love and prayers to our military, firemen, policemen, and all the first responders and to all those who lost loved ones. We will never forget.

In this scene, Shyann and Luke just found themselves together in the pantry...alone.

Hell, as soon as she got out of here, she was
going for blood. Then she was going for his balls,

with her soccer goal kick, baby.

She should have known he was up to no good,

but the minute his hands had landed on her hips,

she’d been lost to sensation. His spicy aroma, heated

touch, and magic kiss had made her lose her mind,

and before she’d known up from down, he’d had his

mouth on her breasts and his hand down her pants,

giving her an incredible, albeit ill-timed, orgasm.

Why did he have to work her body so good?

Top Ten Reasons to Plot Your Story First

I am such a plotser (combination plotter and pantser). I might or might not write my plot down, but I know most of the key points in my story before I get too far into it. Let's face it, though I feel it steals some of my creativity, I would do myself a lot better if I could plot everything up front. So, here are my top ten reasons to plot.

10. Teacher told you to. (As an educator, I fully endorse this reason)
9.    Fashion is so unreliable, you never know if you are wearing the current en vogue pants to write in today.
8.    You get to use all those colorful post-it notes, cards, timelines, and you get to make collages.
7.    You don't want to be a Moses--wandering around for forty years on the same project.
6.    All the cool writers are doing it. (As an educator, I can't endorse this reason really)
5.    When someone asks, "What's your story about?", you might actually know.
4.    People take you more seriously as a writer (Bwahaha, excuse the snorting and laughing coming from myself).
3.    Plot holes big enough to walk through are avoided (Now they're only big enough to get your upper body through).
2.    The writing thing is too easy if you don't add something exciting and complicated to it.
1.    I need one more thing to distract me from writing.

Until then, I hope to tempt readers with excerpts from this story about what happens when two chefs with a romantic past go head to head on a reality show. In this scene, the director tries to get them fired up for the competition.

Then he turned toward the set and, just as the harried woman from earlier came running back in, addressed Shyann and Luke. "I really need you two to heat up the competition. A little playful trash talk, some sabotage, hell, the show is about the best food for a date. Kiss if the mood hits you."

Their gazes collided for one heated moment, and Shyann barely checked a shiver at the thought of his mouth on hers. That would no longer be her first choice for must-see-TV, would it?

Here's a little more information about Into the Fire:

Months after he stole her affections—then her executive chef position—Shyann and Luke meet again under sizzling circumstances, competing head-to-head on a televised cooking show called Kitchen Twist. Each arrives with a motive: Luke intends to win back Shyann’s heart, even as she wants closure on the not-so-tasty heartbreak he once served up.

Luke knows culinary masterpieces require a delicate touch, but that knowledge is tossed out with the leftovers as he works to show Shyann he’s not such a bad guy. Now he pushes his skills to the limit to win the competition and satisfy a bet.

Can two top chefs resist each other as they move out of the pan and into the fire?

Top Ten Worst Ice Cream Flavors

In honor of my father's favorite treat (his birthday), this week's Top Ten list is all about the worst ice cream flavors never invented (thank goodness).

10. Earwax and chocolate swirl with nosehair sprinkles
9.    Sweaty, vanilla gym socks with bottom of the trashbag syrup
8.    Strawberry mayonnaise with caviar mix-ins
7.    Fudgy, belly-fat ripple
6.    Peanut butter and toe-jam with cricket leg toppings
5.    Belly-button lint and mint chip
4.    Sludge and onion pecan
3.    Elbow grease and gravy over mouse chip
2.    Liver and cherry with marshmallow syrup
1. Cookies and Spleen

Yes, they are gross, but they were inspired by a picture of a topping choice at Orange Leaf Yogurt that looked very much like fish eggs. Hopefully, I won't feel so guilty for the delicious peanut butter and chocolate yogurt with Reese Cup mix-ins I gobbled down tonight. It could have been worse, I suppose.

Six Sentence Sunday--Into the Fire

Into the Fire's release date gets ever closer. I'm anxiously awaiting October 5, 2011. Until then, I hope to tempt readers with excerpts from this story about what happens when two chefs with a romantic past go head to head on a reality show. In this scene, Shyann loses her focus on the competition because memories of Luke and her first kiss long ago invade her mind.

Goose bumps had run over her skin, as if announcing the significance of the kiss. Now, as she came back to reality, she released a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. For a little while at least, they’d been great together. But that kiss was nothing more than a memory now, and she would be better off forgetting it.

Mentally shaking herself, Shyann leaned her hands on the counter in front of her. Its cool metal surface felt icy against her palms and reminded her that her company’s future was why she was really here. That was just what she needed, since she clearly didn’t have her head in the game.

Tonight's Ladies' Night is all about my current Work In Progress, Who's the Cake Boss. My inspiration for the hero of the story is one hot Top Chef, and though he didn't win the title in his season, he won the hearts of so many. Not only is he hot, hot, hot in and out of the kitchen, he is also diabetic and was able to use his platform as a Top Chef contestant to bring attention to this widspread medical condition.

So, here's a little about him:

Top Ten Ways You Know You're A Writer

10. Instead of the smell of coffee, it's the smell of paper that wakes you in the morning.
9.    The longest conversation you've had in a day was with a character in your story.
8.    When you open your desk drawer to add one more writing utensil, everything spills out like an overstuffed closet.
7.    Characters in your stories resemble real people you've encountered.
6.    When your Muse begins "talking," you pull your laptop from its case like a gunslinger.
5.    You can talk more in-depth about your characters' lives than you can your own.
4.    You randomly tell people, "Your dialogue doesn't feel authentic."

It's coming soon, so I'm going to be giving six sentence snippets from Into the Fire, my short story with The Wild Rose Press. Looks like October 5, 2011 is the publication date, so my excitement is building like an adolescent shaking a soda pop (I teach this age; I would know).

“I honestly don’t want to hear any explanation from
you now or ever, but if I win? Which I will, of
course.”

“Then I’ll leave it up to you. If you want me to
walk away, I will.” He took a step closer, placed his
hand on her shoulder, and leaned down, his mouth
right next to her ear. “But if you want me to call you
darling, sweetheart, and sugar cheeks all night long,
I’ll do that too.”

Slow Go

The writing has been slow lately. Between crazy health situations and the start-up of the ever-faithful day job again, I'm having trouble focusing.

I think some of it is also the fear that "I can't do it again." You know, publication jitters and all. My short story, Into the Fire, comes out in about a month, and I'm still trying to finish a follow up story, which I truly, truly like, but can't seem to make myself write. Every time I sit down, I get about a page done, but a gazillion plot bunnies hopping around me, taking my focus again.

Today, I get to hang out with the ladies of Kentucky Romance Writers though, and I always walk away completely inspired. So, I'm hoping my little fingers will be flying across the keyboard for a while after the meeting is over. It's never failed me before.

Complications

Still kicking after all these complications, except I'm dealing with medical issues again. Three weeks ago, I elected to have a breast reconstruction surgery. It was supposed to be the happy ending to my breast cancer story. Everything seemed to be going well, until it swelled. That went down eventually, but then it began to get infected. So that's where I am now--another complication. And all along the way, little complications keep coming. But what can I do? People tell me I'm strong, that I'm a trouper who has gone through so much, but the truth is, there is no other option. I have to keep praying, hoping, and trying until things work out. And they will. That's where my strength truly comes in. I don't let myself think of any other option than things working out.

I can't help relating my medical struggle to the ultimate goal of being published in book-length fiction. You see, I take chances, write a piece in which I have confidence, then put it out in front of others to see the reactions. Along the way, there are complications--big and small--and my ability to push through the blocks, the lack of time, the unfortunate medical issues, the plot bunnies, or whatever happens to get in the way of the story is what will ultimately lead to success. Regardless of all these possible problems, I don't let any other option other than pushing through and getting published even become a possibility.

Complications are going to happen, but they're merely bumps in the road. Never full stops.
